CLE | Representing Consumers in Debt Collection Lawsuits

Offered at no cost to attorneys who commit to volunteering with VLPCNY’s Debt Clinic, and for only $25 for those who don’t, this program provides an overview of debt collection lawsuits and steps to take in helping consumers defend against these lawsuits in a limited scope clinic or during full representation. The program is suited for attorneys new to consumer law, as well as attorneys with some experience looking for a refresher. The speakers will go over common issues in debt collection lawsuits, common defenses, motion practice, and ethical considerations for attorneys offering limited-scope assistance.

 Amelia Kohli, Esq. Director, Debt Program, Volunteer Lawyers Project of CNY, Inc.

Amelia Kohli is the Director of the Debt Program at the Volunteer Lawyers Project of CNY, Inc. (VLPCNY). She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Georgia in 2008 and received her Juris Doctorate from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2012. She is admitted to practice law in the state of New York, as well as in the Federal and Bankruptcy Courts in the Western District of New York.

 

Prior to working for VLPCNY, Ms. Kohli was an attorney with Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc.. She began her legal career at LawNY in 2013 as an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow, representing Veterans in a wide range of legal issues as part of the Veterans Legal Corps. After the conclusion of her fellowship, she became a staff attorney, first representing Rochester area residents with housing and benefits matters, before transitioning to LawNY’s regional consumer project in 2017. She provided legal representation for consumers facing debt collection lawsuits in city, County, and County Supreme Courts. She has also represented consumers in affirmative lawsuits in Federal and County Supreme Courts.
